Endowed Scholarship Named for
Headmaster Vance Wilson
At the annual Alumni Dinner, the Alumni Association named Vance Wilson an honorary alumnus of the school. St. Albans also announced the creation of the Headmaster Vance Wilson Scholarship. Inspired by the Governing Board chairs who served during Mr. Wilson’s tenure and by STRIVE Campaign Co-Chair Rob Carter ’80, eighty Wilson-era trustees, alumni, and parents have donated $1.5 million to create the scholarship. Agreeing wholeheartedly that a scholarship would be the best way to honor the school’s seventh headmaster, the group worked quietly to raise the funds while keeping the scholarship a surprise for Mr. Wilson.
“When we conceived of the Headmaster Vance Wilson Scholarship, its impact was to be two-fold: one, to honor a man who has done so much for the school, the teachers, and the boys; and two, to create a permanent legacy that would help fulfill his number one academic priority—to provide financial assistance to those who otherwise could not afford to attend,” said Carter. “To date, Vance doesn’t have his name on a building or a hall or a field (and, knowing Vance, he’s quite happy about that). This substantially endowed fund will serve as a perpetual tribute to Vance while bringing more outstanding boys to St. Albans—without regard for their ability to pay—in perpetuity.”
